What we're studying:

  • The 6th graders are currently studying biodiversity, but learned about machines earlier in the year. The seventh graders are studying chemistry.

Our teacher's favorite quote:

  • "Everything in the Portal!"
    Because we only had two lunch periods a week to work, and storage space is limited in our Manhattan school, we had to take everything down before our teacher's next class came in. We stored our machine in a closet in her room we nicknamed The Portal.

Why we think we should win:

  • We are a dedicate group of students that voluntarily gives up two lunch periods a week to work on our Rube Goldberg machine. We could only meet for 80 minutes each week for four months to get it done, but we persisted in the face of obstacles (including runaway marbles) and created something great in honor of Rube Goldberg's 130th birthday.

Suggestion for next years challenge:

  • Turning on a computer
    Shutting down a computer
    Watering a plant (we want to give it a try!)

The I.S. 289 Invention: Hammer in a Nail! “Rube Goldberg” knocks down a funnel (1), tipping a lever (2) which pulls on a string (3) to remove a square of cardboard from the ramp. The cardboard square was holding back marbles, which are now free to move down the ramp (4). The marbles hit a piece of radiator pipe (5), which falls into a bucket (6). The bucket is attached to a pulley system, which lifts a crate (7). The crate was holding back two wind-up cars, which now roll down a ramp (8) and hit a book. The books fall like dominoes (9) and knock over a cluster of radiator pipes and party favors tied together (10). The pipes and party favors are attached to a pulley system, which lifts the back of the hammer (11). This hammers the nail (12).
